Steve McQueen & Robert Preston

Noted recently by the LA Times as one of the most important films of 1972,  the ground breaking year in cinema history that included such films as “The Godfather” and “Cabaret,” the Sam Peckinpah film starring Steve McQueen has a world wide audience that could be described as a cult following.

Jeb Rosebrook

Shot entirely on location in Prescott, Ariz., in the summer of 1971, Keith Woods interviews Jeb about the origins of the story, his introduction to Producer Joe Wizan, Director Peckinpah, and the star, McQueen.

Joining in the conversation is Jeb’s son, Stuart Rosebrook, Ph.D., a historian of the real and imagined West, with a speciality in Western cinema. The younger Rosebrook was an extra in the film while Jeb recieved an honorary membership in the stuntman’s association for his work in the wild cow milking event and the historic and memorable bar fight in the Palace Bar on Prescott’s Whiskey Row.

Arizona Centennial Radio Show by 6th Graders from St. Theresa’s

Posted by on Feb 10, 2012 in Radio Episode | 0 comments

PHOENIX, AZ – Sixth grade students from Saint Theresa Catholic School are celebrating the Arizona state centennial in a very special way! They are hosting a one-hour special program on KKNT-AM’s Centennial Stories radio show, this Sunday at 3pm (960-AM). “It all started as a classroom project,” said Molly Woods, their teacher. “The students were writing stories about different decades in our state’s history. Then we were presented this wonderful opportunity to showcase many of their findings, and share some new stories, about their families and communities.”

The show was recorded over the course of a few days this last week, in class and around campus. The most popular spot for student interviews was at lunch! One student told of her great-great grandmother who, as a baby, was a passenger in a car that was hit by a state governor’s train.   After finding the baby, who was thrown from the car, Governor Hunt insisted the train be put in reverse back to town to see that the girl received proper medical care. Other students shared their visions of the future, one debunked the Mayan 2012 apocolypse, while several others predicted the use of flying cars in another hundred years.

In all, 36 students from Mrs. Woods 6th grade class participated in this assignment; 4 as hosts, with the others as announcers and interviewees.

About St. Theresa Catholic School:

It serves more than 500 students, from Pre-K to 8th grades, in the Arcadia area of Phoenix, Arizona. It recently was recognized as a Blue Ribbon Award Winning School for excellence in the classroom.

Football Coach’s Lucky Haircut

Posted by on Jan 19, 2012 in Stories | 0 comments

Football Coach’s Lucky Haircut

This story ran in 1996 about then ASU football coach Bruce Snyder’s lucky haircut, from Brad Hultquist of Grooming Humans.

Losing to USC hurt, to be sure, but Washington State still has legitimate bowl aspirations. “I think we’re sitting in a really good position,” coach Mike Price said Tuesday.

At 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the Pacific-10 Conference, the Cougars will be difficult to overlook if they win their final three games – on the road against UCLA and Stanford, home against Washington.

The Pac-10 has commitments for four teams to go to bowl games. Arizona State (8-0, 5-0) is expected to clinch the conference’s Rose Bowl berth by winning two of its final three, starting with Oregon State this weekend. The Cotton, Holiday, Sun and/or Aloha bowls will select the Pac-10’s three other postseason representatives.

Assuming fourth-ranked ASU goes to the Rose Bowl, WSU could secure second place  outright by winning its final three and getting some help.

For this to happen, the most likely scenario would be as follows: Washington (5-2, 4-1) beats USC (5-3, 3-2) Saturday and Arizona (4-3, 2-2) loses one of its final four games. If the Cougars lose one of their final three games, all bets are off.

That is with the exception of the remote possibility of going to the Independence Bowl,   which has the only opening that is not committed to a conference or the bowl alliance. Need a win? Go see Cal. California is being exposed as a team that loaded up against soft competition early in the season.

Since starting 5-0, the Bears have lost consecutive games to Washington State and UCLA. UCLA coach Bob Toledo, whose team was 2-4 before beating Cal 38-29, put the Bears’ fast start in perspective:

“When we were playing Tennessee, they were playing San Jose State. And when we were playing Michigan, they were playing Nevada-Reno. And when we were playing Arizona State, they were playing Oregon. “They played San Diego State without San Diego State’s best running back, and they played SC when they had several people out.” In other words, don’t be surprised to see Arizona beat Cal this weekend in Berkeley.

Superstitious Sun Devils. As ASU inches closer to its first Rose Bowl since 1987 and its first unbeaten season since 1975, the Sun Devils have become more steadfast in their superstitions. Coach Bruce Snyder, for instance, hasn’t had a haircut since August.

“I told him it was a lucky cut,” Snyder’s barber, Brad Hultquist, told the Arizona Daily Star. Hultquist, incidentally, is a Nebraska fan, and Snyder remembers his barber saying the cut “might even help against Nebraska.” The Sun Devils won, 19-0.

Offensive tackle Juan Roque, meanwhile, keeps a deer hoof in his locker and carries it with him on the road. Teammates rub it for good luck. Fearing a jinx, Snyder has even banned the phrase “Rose Bowl” from use around the house.

- Mike Sando, Spokesman-Review, “Cougars Can Still Earn Bid,” October 30, 1996
